The 21st century has often been a time fantasized about in the science fiction of the 20th and the 21st century. Starting in the year 2001, the first two decades of the century has seen an ever-changing set of technologies and geopolitical and economic situations. This reality has in some cases met the predictions of the older science stories and in more cases, it has not. It has also fueled a new generation of science fiction stories.

2001

  • September 11th: A set of terror attacks occur in the United States by the terror organization Al-Qaeda. The attacks cause a shift in American and Western society that affected science fiction stories. The effect included the additions of themes about terrorism and surveillance to works.
  • November 15th: Halo: Combat Evolved released on the Xbox console. It would spawn a large franchise of games, comics, novels, web series, and other media.

  • December: The economic downturn known as the Great Recession begins and would last until 2009.

2015

  • February 27th: Leonard Nimoy of Star Trek fame passes away.

  • RobotWar: Rather than fighting on conventional battlefields with conventional troops, the nations of the world fight via combat robots in a battle arena.

2003

  • Stargate SG-1: Earth launches its first interstellar spacecraft, the Prometheus. 
  • Stargate SG-1: Anubis destroys the planet of Abydos.

2004

  • Stargate SG-1: The forces of Anubis engage with Tauri forces over Antarctica. 
  • Stargate Atlantis: A Tauri expedition to Atlantis begins. 

2005

2009

  • Stargate Universe: To escape the destruction of Icarus Base, a group of Tauri are stranded on an Ancient ship known as the Destiny. 

2019

2020

  • Early to mid-2020 - A Quiet Place: Blind extraterrestrial creatures of terrifying viciousness invade Earth. A rural family finds the key to killing them.  
  • c. Spring/Summer - Battlefield 4: A coup in China ignites a war between the United States and a Chinese-Russian alliance. At the end of the war, battles take place over high-tech weapons and the Pan-Asian Coalition is formed.
  • October-November - Call of Duty: Strike Team: The U.S. military tracks down and fights an unknown enemy.
  • Future X-Cops: Terrorist from the year 2080 attempt to kill a future professor.
  • Edge of Tomorrow: An alien species known as the mimics are defeated.
  •  Droid (film): The crime rate in Los Angeles is high and a former gang member reunites with his ex-wife. 
  • Annihilation Earth: Earth and humanity are destroyed after meltdowns in Europe's Electromagnetic Vacuum Energy power plants.
  •  Pacific Rim: Large, robotic machines known as Jaegers are used to defend Hong Kong from kaiju.
  • Mission to Mars: The crew of the Mars I mission makes contact with an alien presence on Mars.

2021

  • Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep: Newer editions of the novel take place in this year instead of 1992.

2022

Los Angeles in 2022

  • Blade Runner 2022: Blackout: Members of the replicant freedom movement detonate a device that creates an electromagnetic pulse to destroy the replicant registry. This action would lead to the ban on the production of replicants that lasts over a decade.

2023

  • Avengers Endgame: The Avengers of Earth-199999 restore the lives of half the universe after Thanos' genocide.

2026

  • Star Trek: The Third World War begins and will run for decades.

2035

  • November 25th - The Martian: The crew of the Ares III mission is forced to evacuate. In the commotion, Mark Watney goes missing and is presumed to be killed and is accidentally stranded on Mars.

2036

  • 2036: Nexus Dawn: The ban on replicant production ends. Nexus-9 replicants begin production.

2037

  • February - The Martian: Mark Watney is recovered from Mars.  

2046

  • Lost in Space (2018): The Robinson family is lost in space after leaving Earth with other colonists due to a possible extinction-level impact event. 

2054

  • November - Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare: Exo Zombies: The Altas private military corporation causes a zombie outbreak. 

2057

  •  2057 (Television Series): The fossil fuels of the world are nearing depletion. Tensions between the United States and China are at an all-time high. Smart cities full of computerized devices are the norm. Artificial organs are readily available from 3D printers. A joint American-Chinese solar panel testing space station makes an energy technology breakthrough.

2063

  • April 5th - Star Trek: Humanity makes the first contact with intelligent alien life in the form of the Vulcans. The latter would guide the development of the former over the next century. This event would be seen in the film Star Trek: First Contact.

Late 21st Century

  • Star Trek: The Earth-Kzin Wars between humanity and the Kzinti take place.
  • Ad Astra: The Lima Project in the outer reaches of the solar system causes power surges. The U.S. Space Command tasks Major Roy McBride to finding the source. This date placement is based on the film being described as "near-future" and the technology seen in the film.
