Crack of Doom was the sixth episode produced and released for The Time Tunnel and was the sixth of 30 episodes shown.
Summary[]
After being time-shifted from witnessing one of the final battles of the War of 1812 from the previous week’s episode, Doug Phillips and Tony Newman are transported a bit forward in time to the island of Krakatoa in August, 1883. Upon interfering with a local tribe that is still living in the Dark Ages, they think that the lava is angry and it must have a sacrifice to be appeased, which the “devils from the sky” (meaning Phillips and Newman, as they would be called) would probably be their best bet in solving this problem.
Luckily the two are rescued by British scientist Dr. Everett Holland, who is also there with his daughter Eve conducting research. Upon finding out when and where they are, Phillips and Newman realize the massive volcanic eruption is about to happen, which will end up killing tens of thousands of people. Unfortunately it is difficult to try to convince the Hollands to leave, as Eve is suspicious of the two, thinking that they are there to steal the research done by her father, who has never gotten his big break in the fields of science for his work.
Meanwhile Phillips and Newman must figure out a way to get as many people as possible off the island while trying to deal with the local natives as well.
Background information/trivia[]
- It is revealed in this episode that Phillips is knowledgeable about volcanoes, and when trying to communicate with the local natives, Newman speaks some Malayan.
- At the Project Tic-Toc base, the team there can only watch and send back objects and people to try to help out Phillips and Newman. However, they were able to bring back Newman briefly, although a time warp occurred in the process, causing everyone at Project Tic-Toc to be frozen once Newman arrived. He leaves some information behind, and for the first time in the series, voice communication with Newman is established with the Tic-Toc personnel near the end after he sends himself back to Krakatoa to try to help Phillips.
