The Grain is a piece of human technology created in the not-too-distant-future as a means to record and replay memories. Surgically implanted behind the ear with a pertruding a thin wire connected to the optic nerve, grains can record whatever memory a person experiences through their eyes and are destined to be as common in society as smartphones and tablets. A person is able to control replaying, pausing, and deleting past memories with the use of a wireless remotes that can even project memories viewed on a flat screen TV that resembles plains of glass. People are also given the ability to zoom in on paused memories and when a memory contains two people talking from a distance and can't be heard by someone with a grain, the grain has a lip reading function that, when zoomed in on the two talking, can determine what they are saying. Due to the grains growth in the future, memories recorded are often probed at public areas like airports to prevent acts of terrorism. The only way to remove a grain without any potential damage to eye sight is by having a person with surgical expertise surgically remove it. Removing it manually without precision could result in potential blindness and/or brain damage.
